How do you choose the best warm gray paint color (like Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray) for your walls? It’s not easy!
I mean it’s not as if there’s not like a million shades of gray or anything!
It’s probably no surprise that I get asked about gray paint colors all the time. So today, I’m sharing one of my top favorite gray paint colors with you! Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray.
Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray is the perfect warm, neutral, gray paint color for pretty much any space in your home.
I think my favorite part of Sherwin Williams Dorian gray is its versatility. Some gray paint colors can come off feeling too cool. When trying to create comfortable, warm, cozy spaces, this is something I try and avoid.
Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray is a warmer hue of gray that adds a touch of warmth to a room. Because it is more warm, it does a wonderful job of making a room feel cozy and welcoming.
Is Dorian Gray a Greige?
“Greige” is a combination of gray and beige tones. Like if gray and beige got together and had a love child – it would be “greige”. It’s kind of the perfect blend between warm and cool colors meeting right in the middle. Not too warm, not too cool. The perfect happy medium.
Dorian Gray is definitely more of a neutral gray. While some gray paint colors tend to pull blue hues – I would consider Dorian Gray a true greige!
In case you’re looking for other comparable greige paint colors, here’s a peek at a few of my favorites.
Is Dorian Gray a Warm Gray?
Because Dorian Gray is more of a greige, you will not see as much blue undertones in it. This means it is a warm gray! My favorite hue of gray is one with warm undertones, making Dorian Gray one of my favorites. No surprise there
When thinking about warm vs. cool colors, there are specific colors that bring out these feelings. There are cool or warm undertones within each one. Even though you may not see those exact undertones when you look at a paint, doesn’t mean it’s not there.
So when we think about warm paint colors, we consider how much red, orange, or yellow might be included in that color. These are the color tones that evoke a feeling of warmth because they remind us of actual physical things that do provide warmth like the sun or fire.
On the other hand – purple, blue, and green are cool colors.
The Best Complimentary Colors to Use with Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray
Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray is definitely a light, neutral color so I always suggest pairing it with darker, more bold colors. My favorite colors are like Sherwin Williams Iron Ore, or Pewter Green. Of course it will also compliment really well with a clean linen white. But that’s just the beauty of a neutral color like Dorian gray, it will go with so many other colors!
What does Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray Look Like in a Real Home?
A majority of our home is painted in two other favorite gray paint colors, Sherwin Williams Mindful Gray and Sherwin Williams Repose Gray.
We started by doing Dorian Gray in our small laundry room. The laundry room has a dark wood vinyl flooring that makes the walls pull a darker, warmer shade of Sherwin Williams Dorian Gray.
I actually ended up doing a DIY hand painted accent wall in the laundry room. It was a fun way to bring a touch of character to the space. You can read more about my DIY hand painted accent wall here.
On the other hand, we also painted our basement in Dorian Gray. In the basement it ends up looking more like a true gray. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that there is gray carpet down there as well.
