Ok ok ok….I know what you’re thinking. This term is SO overused, and I would agree, it’s cliche. But I want you to keep an open mind with me for a second. I am a sensible girl, as in, like…I don’t get too caught up in fads or buzz words and I like to consider myself pretty down to earth.
But girl, I am a tired mama. Especially after just spending five days in the hospital with a very sick little babe. And I know (because I figured out the hard way) that if I don’t care for me I will unravel and everyone suffers when mama is unraveled.
Girl, Wash Your Face
Seriously, give yourself a couple hours to wash your hair, wash your face, shave your legs…groom yourself, girl! You know us busy moms rarely have the time we really need to shower and get ready each morning. Remember in Saved by the Bell when Kelly would always tell Zach she couldn’t go out because she had to wash her hair? I never understood that until I became a busy working mom and washing my hair became a special once a week occasion! But in all honesty, one of the ways I treat myself is by indulging in Target face mask (nothing special about Target, I just basically live there), or special lotion or scrub to rejuvenate my skin. It’s incredible what a difference that fresh feeling makes in your overall well being! I’ve linked a few of my faves for an at home spa day below:
Go for a Walk & Listen To a Podcast
One of my favorite ways to give myself some love is to get moving. Now, I won’t lie…this is not a strength of mine. I am not a habitual exerciser, should be, but I am not. However, whenever I feel like I am stuck in a rut or a funk and need something to spark my energy back or help me feel rejuvenated I will go for a long walk or jog and listen to one of my favorite podcasts. Usually it’s the Rise podcast by Rachel Hollis because I can always take away something from her episodes and apply them to my life. But that time I get away from whatever chaos is ensuing at home to get my blood pumping, endorphins flowing, and inspiration taken to heart allows me to come back home feeling refreshed and ready to take on my minions!
Read a Book
I love books that give me tangible tools to become a better, healthier person as a whole. But I also love books that let me escape to other places and just unplug for a bit (especially historical fiction). Sometimes we just need to hold a book in our hands and step away from technology. Ever taken a technology break? How did you feel when it was over? My guess is you felt refreshed and clear headed!
Journal & Meditate
Wake up a little earlier than normal to give yourself some quiet time in the morning to start your day. Do this intentionally. So set your alarm, promise yourself you’re going to do it and keep the promise. Imagine how nice it would be to start your day with a cup of coffee in hand, some worship music playing, journaling, meditating, dreaming, praying. You could even invest in a special early morning coffee mug that you save specifically for your early mornings. I also love a good journal and whole heartedly believe if you invest in a pretty one, you’ll be more likely to use it. Imagine how centered you would feel when everyone wakes up! I try to do this maybe once a month, but I am going to challenge myself to do this once a week either on Saturday/Sunday mornings.
Do Something You Love
My last tip for you is to take time to do something that sparks joy for you. That’s a hot buzz word right now, but truly examine what that might be for you and give yourself some space and permission to do it. I love getting a manicure, so this is something that we budget for and I make time for. I also love writing and creating. I find that when I allow myself the time to do these things I become a better version of myself and then everyone wins. Because when mom is the best version of herself, then she’s able to be more for everyone else.
I hope one of these speaks to you and you are able to take a moment this weekend to do a little self-care. Take care of you, girlfriend.
