Your evening cleaning routine can be the thing that turns your stressful mornings around.
I get all kinds of questions about how I keep our home clean being a working mom of three little ones. While it’s definitely no easy task, there are some small things I do each evening that really help alleviate the cleaning workload.
I thought I would share my evening cleaning routine with you. It’s no magical trick, it’s just what we do and it works well for our family.
With our evening routine, I load the dishwasher with all of our dinner dishes first. I try to get as much in as I can, but I usually have some dishes that won’t fit. So once I get the dishwasher loaded, I get it started and then hand wash, dry and put away all of the other dishes. I could leave the dishes in the sink, but my ultimate goal is to be able to come down to a clean kitchen in the morning, and I know if I tell myself I will do them after the kids go to bed, I won’t. By the time everyones snuggled in to their beds, Mama is TIRED. So I just do it while I am there.
Wipe Down Surfaces
Once all of the dishes have been put away, I go to work cleaning all of the surfaces. I love our Thieves essential oil cleaner because it smells so good and I can trust it’s working to keep the countertops clean without all of the toxins of other household cleaners. If I am not using the Thieves cleaner, then I use my Norwex cloths. They do an excellent job at getting all of the crumbs picked up off of the counters. I make sure to wipe the chairs, and will even sometimes quickly wipe down any cabinets I see that need it.
Pick Up Toys
We usually make sure the kids clean up toys when they head upstairs for our bedtime routine, but if there is anything left out I will grab whats left and put them in our toy basket that lives in our main living room. This is not a pretty organized toy storage, it’s just a wicker basket we use to throw any toys the kids are enjoying playing with at the time. I like it too, because we can close it and it doesn’t look like toy storage.
Sweep/Run the Vacuum
We have hardwood floors throughout the house. Usually I will sweep in the kitchen after dinner to clean up all of the crumbs left from the kids. However, sometimes I will run the vacuum over the rugs if I feel like it needs it. We do have a Roomba, and that has been an amazing help to keeping the floors clean! I can run it when we head upstairs to do bedtime and baths and not have to worry about a thing.
Prep Coffee & Make Lunches
Before heading upstairs for our bedtime routine, I get our coffee pot prepped for the morning and make the boys lunches for the next day. We try to meal prep lunches for my husband and I on Sunday’s so we don’t have to worry about prepping our lunches each night. It takes a little bit of the stress off of us throughout the week.
Our evening cleaning routine actually starts the moment we walk in the door. We usually try to get the backpacks emptied when we get home, but sometimes we end up doing it after dinner. We make sure to go through the home/school folder and address any forms that need signed and returned to school right away. We do this because if we don’t, we know it’ll get lost or forgotten. So just taking care of it while it’s at the front of our minds is best. Then, we look at papers that get sent home and will only keep one or two papers that we want to put in our keep sake boxes.
As you may imagine, five people produce an ungodly amount of dirty clothes on a daily basis. I do a load of laundry every day. Yes, my friends, every day. So part of my evening routine is to switch laundry over, and fold the basket of clean laundry. If I do this, I don’t end up spending my entire Sunday doing laundry. Personally, the few minutes a day I sacrifice to keep up on this is totally worth it for the weekend family time I get in return.
And that’s it – thats our evening cleaning routine! My goal each evening is to get all of this (mostly) done before the kids go to bed so that when they do, I can have some relaxing moments not doing chores around the house. Waking up to a prepped, clean home definitely makes our mornings run so much more smooth and gets us all set on the right foot as we begin our day!
