Oh how I love a good area rug, you guys! The best area rugs will transform a space and leave you feeling like a whole new woman (or man)!
So when I had the opportunity to collaborate with Boutique Rugs, I knew it would be the perfect time to share some of the things I have learned about area rugs along the way.
We have area rugs in most of the rooms in our home. They add warmth where the hardwood floors are cold. They add a pop of color that will brighten the room. They are easy to clean and much more affordable to change out than carpet!
Styling an Area Rug
Area rug rules of thumb can be somewhat tricky. This is something that I see a lot. People love to use rugs to add texture, pattern, and color to their spaces but sometimes they aren’t clued into the dos and dont’s of rug styling. It’s important to know the right size of rug for your space. Here a few easy guidelines to follow when you are styling the area rugs in your home.
- Rugs in a living space should be placed where couches and chairs front legs can be placed on the rug.
- When styling a rug in the dining room, the chairs should all be able to fit on the rug.
- An area rug in the bedroom should fit underneath the bed and extend past the edge of the bed.
How Thick Should an Area Rug Be?
It really depends on your personal preference as to how thick an area rug should be.
For the record, the thickness of an area rug is called the “pile”. A low pile rug is going to be less plush but easier to clean. A higher pile rug is going to provide more comfort but is going to be more expensive and likely more difficult to clean. Additionally, a low pile rug is going to hold up better to wear and tear and last longer.
The best area rugs we have come to love have been a low pile, affordable rug that can be easily cleaned when kids spill.
Best Area Rugs for Hardwood Floors
Our entire main level of our home has dark stained hardwood floors. I have yet to find a rug that doesn’t compliment the dark walnut stain of our hardwood floors. We have had both very neutral and bold and bright colored rugs.
Area rugs on hardwood floors are a must have because they provide warmth. Big open rooms with hardwood floors can feel very sterile and cold, nobody wants to live in a space like that. In order to create a cozy feel, area rugs in main gathering areas are a good idea.
I recently added a new rug to our dining room. We got the Clyman Area Rug from Boutique Rugs. It has beautiful bright bold colors that bright our dining room to life!
Where to Buy the Best Area Rugs
Boutique Rugs is a great option for purchasing beautiful area rugs for your home. They have a really wide selection that is both affordable and will fit many different styles and personalities.
Most of the rugs in my home are from my favorite local shop (of course), RE. I love to support local and small businesses any chance I can get and the rugs I have from RE are very well made and beautiful. I shared some of my favorite vintage rugs here in this post.
The point here is that buying from an online retailer like Boutique Rugs is great because it’s convenient and has a big selection. But don’t forget to shop the local and small stores as well, because many offer great options and prices too!
How Much Do Area Rugs Cost?
You may be curious what the investment of an area rug might cost. Don’t be alarmed when many rugs begin at $300 and go up from there. It’s important to remember that in comparison the carpet for your space, this rug is interchangeable.
And…you get what you pay for. So just keep in mind these things when you are shopping around. Our main living area has to have a 9×12 rug, this is often a $500 investment. It really does just depend on the type and style of rug you are going for.
Choosing the Right Area Rug
When you place an area rug in your space it, often times, becomes the focal point of the room. That’s why it’s important to choose the best rug for your space. In order to make it the most simple for you here are just a few things to consider when buying a new area rug.
Size: Make sure the rug isn’t too small for the space. A bigger rug is typically better. A smaller rug in a space will just look like an afterthought.
Texture: The texture of a rug is important to consider. A shag rug can be difficult to clean, especially if you have little ones who drop food often. You’ll want to make the right choice for your lifestyle.
Color: The wrong color rug can be detrimental to a room. A neutral rug will compliment many spaces well and will change with the seasons and trends.
Pattern: It’s important to choose a pattern that does not compete with the rest of the decor in your space. A neutral pattern that is not too bold is a perfect pattern for your space.
What Area Rugs are Best
Area rug styles have evolved quite a bit over the last several years, and this spring is no exception. I am sharing my guide for the best area rugs for this Spring. Vintage looking rugs without the vintage price tag are among my favorites on trend right now. I love the worn beautiful patterns of these rugs. Many of the rugs that are very stylish currently are in the red family. While I am not typically someone who loves the color red, when it’s woven into the beautiful tapestry of a rug, it feels so elegant and royal.
